Social Media
My daughter convinced me only last year to text message and join Facebook or risk not being able to reach her or communicate with her very often. I now wonder how I ever lived without those two things in my life before. Ironically, she is now on a self-imposed sabbatical from Facebook as she has found she has become sort of a slave to it. Attached is a paper she wrote in her “Freshman Comp.” class this first year in college, which earned an A, and documents the social anxiety she has had as a Facebook “addict.” As for me, I miss being able to “creep on” my daughter now that she is off-line. I didn’t do it to snoop – just because it was nice to see her pictures and words when I did not have time to actually talk to her. Social media, for me, has actually allowed me to keep in touch with friends and family more than I ever have before as it affords you the opportunity for quick “check ins” even at 2:00 in the morning!
